What the results of Portfolio Lab mean and what they don’t. In short: a calculator and a knowledge base, not advice; backtests are model calculations made with hindsight.
1. Information, not advice
Portfolio Lab is a tool for backtests, analyses and planning, with a knowledge base. Its tools, results and articles are general information. They are not investment, tax or legal advice and not a personal recommendation: we know neither your goals nor your financial situation and do not check whether an investment suits you. You make your own decisions; if you need help, an independent adviser can provide it.
2. Not regulated, no orders, no custody
Portfolio Lab is not a bank, investment firm or broker and is not supervised by any financial regulator. We do not accept or execute orders and do not hold money or securities.
3. Results are hypothetical
A backtest shows how a portfolio would have performed, not how it will perform. It is made with hindsight: whoever picks securities, weights and rules today already knows what happened. Nobody actually held the portfolio that way at the time. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
4. What the calculation simplifies
Bid-ask spreads, execution at other prices, the price impact of large orders, trading bottlenecks and your own behavior in a crisis are left out or simplified. Costs, taxes and reinvestment follow the assumptions you set. The tax calculation applies today’s rules to the whole period.
5. Data and long histories
Prices, interest rates, economic and fund data come from public third-party sources. They can be missing, delayed or wrong. For the years before a fund existed, we partly build long series from indices and approximations. You cannot buy an index directly, and lists of today’s constituents only contain the ones that survived. Check important figures yourself before making a decision.
6. Methodology changes
We keep improving models and sources. The same input can therefore give a different result later, and other providers calculate differently. How each tool calculates is described in the methodology.
7. Estimates, optimization and signals
Optimizations, forecasts, simulations and signals rely on quantities estimated from the past and react strongly to small changes. The better a rule fits in hindsight, the more likely it has only traced chance. A signal or alert only checks the rule you set yourself and is not a call to act.
8. Templates and examples
Templates, model portfolios, index profiles and worked examples explain concepts. They are not a selection for you, and funds or indices that are mentioned are examples, not recommendations.
9. Risks
Prices fluctuate. A strategy can underperform for many years, and you can lose all of the money you invest. Foreign currencies, leverage, short selling and options increase the risk.
10. Independent and ad-free
Portfolio Lab receives no money from fund companies, brokers or issuers and shows no advertising. It is funded only by its own plans.
11. For adults
Portfolio Lab is meant for adults. You must be at least 18 years old to create an account.
12. Links to other sites
Articles link to sources so you can check them. The operators of other sites are responsible for their content.
13. For users in the United States
Portfolio Lab is not registered as an investment adviser or broker-dealer with the SEC, FINRA or any state securities regulator. Its content is general and impersonal and is not tailored to any individual.
